John Dickens, the father of Charles Dickens, worked as a naval pay clerk. Because of poor bookkeeping due to a weak memory when drunk coupled with being in a position of handling other people's money, John accumulated sizable debts with the Royal Navy as the money went unrecorded in naval accounts.
