In the book The Tales of Despereaux why does forgive his father?

In the book "The Tales of Despereaux", Despereaux does not forgive his father. His father, called Lester, is a cowardly mouse who abandoned Despereaux and his mother when they were in danger. Despereaux never meets his father again and holds onto his anger and resentment towards him.
