Bran leads Will to Hibernia, a forest, and tells him about his destiny to confront and defeat the Gray Man. Will initially disbelieves Bran and dismisses the idea of being a warden. However, as the story unfolds, he witnesses signs and encounters that prove his connection to the old legends.
Accompanying Will on his journey are his cousin, Evanlyn, a self-reliant and headstrong girl, and Horace, a loyal forest boy who becomes their devoted friend and protector. Together, they traverse dangerous forests and face challenges that test their courage and friendship.
As Will, Evanlyn, and Horace continue their quest, they encounter allies and enemies along the way. They meet Alyss, a mysterious wanderer with strong magic powers; Halt, a wise and skilled ranger who becomes Will's mentor in archery and survival skills; and Araluen's King Duncan, who provides support and guidance.
