The Diary of a Young Girl (originally published under the Dutch title, Het Achterhuis, meaning "The Secret Annex" or "The Secret Annex: 1942–1944") is a book of the writings from the Dutch teenager Anne Frank while she was hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. It is one of the most widely read books in the world with over 30 million copies sold.
Anne Frank began writing the diary on June 12, 1942, on her 13th birthday, and continued writing until her arrest by the Gestapo on August 4, 1944. She addresses the diary as if it were a friend, whom she calls "Kitty." The diary documents her life in hiding with her family and four other people in the Secret Annex, a concealed part of her father's business premises in Amsterdam.
